The aim of this study, presented recently in ASAS 2014, was to evaluate the effect of GUSTOR BP70 (partially protected sodium butyrate) for reducing gut colonization by Salmonella Typhimurium. A total of 42 4-week-old commercial piglets were randomly distributed into two different experimental dietary groups (8 replicates per treatment). Treatment 1 was a control diet without additives and treatment 2 was the same diet supplemented with 3 kg/t GUSTOR BP70. After 7 days of adaptation, the pigs were challenged with Salmonella Typhimurium (10 8 CFU). Faecal consistency and rectal temperature were evaluated 24 and 72 h post infection (PI). On day 1 and 7 PI, fecal secretion of Salmonella was evaluated. On day 4 and 8 PI, one animal per replicate was euthanized to evaluate inflammatory answer (TNF-α and Pig-Map plasmatics), histomorphological changes and Salmonella presence in colon (8 day PI).
