Use of organic acids and their salts in swine nutrition

The last presentation from Norel was about he use of acidifiers in piglets. Practiced for several years already, this a strategy well accepted by nutritionists

The purpose of the presentation was to review the literature available and describe the mode of action of acids, their beneficial effects on gut micro flora, the improvement in nutrient digestibility and the favorable effect on development of the gastrointestinal tract. Indeed, especially under stressful or disease situations, acids appear to be an effective measure to reduce diarrhea and mortality and to ensure good performance. It was also explained that, by combining inorganic and organic acids together, it is possible to reduce the level of the additive in the diet and ensure a smoother transition during the post weaning phase at a more economical cost
