Protective effect of Gustor during oxidative stress

GUSTOR (sodium butyrate) helps to reinforce the integrity of the intestinal barrier. This is partly due to its use by enterocytes as a source of energy, but other mechanisms are involved. To better understand the mode of action, a study was set up to evaluate the capacity of GUSTOR to protect the gastrointestinal tract epithelium from inflammation produced by oxidative stress. Transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) was measured in IPEC-J2 (porcine intestinal columnar epithelial) cells to elucidate the effect of GUSTOR (sodium butyrate) on cell barrier function under oxidative stress. Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) and Trypan Blue Dye Exclusion (TBDE) methods were used to determine if GUSTOR conferred cytoprotection of IPEC-J2 against oxidative stress.
