KEY ROLE OF FLAVORINGS IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION

October 11, 2022

Currently, the livestock industry main challenge is to maintain the highest ration quality at a competitive Price. It is a difficult task, considering the raw materials market volatility (Table 1). Without forgetting, that feed costs for the livestock industry have always represented a high percentage of the total cost of production (Bach, 2012).

Raw materials' high price, and the possible low availability of some of them, is forcing the industry to increase the prices and even reformulate rations. Undoubtedly, in this volatile situation, flavouring substances have become a valuable tool, contributing in improving both olfactory and palatability characteristics and masking unpleasant odours and aftertaste of some of the components of the ration. In other words, with flavourings, we are offering flexibility in the use of different raw materials in diets, even those that may be less appealing. In this way, we reduce the impact on the intake level due to the change of formulation and the consumption of the rations could be guaranteed and even increased.

In order to help our customers, Norel has been developing flavours and sweeteners, for more than 35 years, to increase feed palatability, thus reducing the limiting factor of low feed intake on the farms performance parameters. The different tests carried out by our technical department support our flavourings as a solution to increase palatability and feed intake.
