Its economic consequences are substantial, provided that the virus produces severe mortality among infected piglets. Spray-dried porcine plasma, a feed ingredient used in piglet diets to encourage feed intake and better post-weaning performance, is being investigated as a possible source of transmission. Although there are no conclusive results yet, some feed companies are not taking any chances and had already stopped using it, but this decision is affecting performance results. Norel S.A. along with the SNiBA carried out a trial to determine the effects of the inclusion of an essential oils based flavor (Fluidarom 1003) during the last third of gestation, lactation and post-weaning stages. The idea was to study if the flavor was able to leave a familiar sign (imprinting) to the piglets and if this could facilitate them the transition to solid feed, improve their feed intake rates and performance. The obtained results showed significant differences during the first week after weaning, the most critical period. Piglets fed with Fluidarom 1003 diets presented 29.4% higher feed intake and 52.98% higher ADG compared to the control group. Fluidarom 1003 could represent an alternative to the above mentioned problem.
