CATION EXCHANGE CAPACITY OF TOXINOR

April 11, 2022

Cation Exchange Capacity (hereinafter referred to as “CEC”), can be defined as the property of certain clays to capture cations, due to its negatively charged ions on their surface. This propriety is the main reason of its use as toxin binder. It´s important to take CEC into account to know the efficacy of a product. However, a high CEC doesn´t mean a better product; above certain levels, the affinity clay-mycotoxin could be lower and can bind some nutrients too.

The objective was to check that Toxinor has a properly CEC, below this critical level.  An analysis was performed with ammonium acetate method. Result was 45,8 meq/100 g. Some authors settle that above 80 meq/100g can be lower the affinity of montmorillonites for aflatoxins (Barrientos-Velázquez et al., 2016), while others suggest that a correct CEC in clays can be established at 70 meq/100g (Dixon et al., 2008). However, in Toxin Binders, an appropriate range can be set by 20-60 meq/100g (Vinyeta, 2004).

Taking into account the following data of efficacy in Toxinor:

It can be concluded that one of the main reasons for Toxinor´s efficacy, while not binding nutrients at our recommended dosage, is his adequate CEC.
