Therefore, the poultry industry is currently in need of alternative management or dietary strategies to prevent and control the incidence and severity of these diseases. NOREL recently developed NATESSE, the ideal combination of sodium butyrate and essential oils; the distinctive presentation of NATESSE is achieved through an exclusive production process offering a unique balance of active substances in free and protected forms, permitting a gradual release during digestion that makes the product effective throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Recent studies in European Universities show that the addition of NATESSE in diets of chickens infected with Clostridium perfringens improves weight gain and decreases the severity of necrotic enteritis by 73% at macroscopic level and 46% at microscopic level. It also brings statistically significant biological changes in cytokine production, suggesting that the addition of NATESSE stimulates the immune response and enhances the protective effect against necrotic enteritis infection. Other results indicate that sodium butyrate and the mix of essential oils, when taken separately, do not perform as well as the unique combination of the two principle ingredients in NATESSE.
